TORWORTH RESULTS

Race 1 Torworth Series: 23-04-09

The 2009 North Midlands Road Racing League kicked off with the first event at Torworth in bright conditions which produced a fast race. The middle group consisting of many newcommers to the League recorded faster lap times compared to any of the corresponding times last year which meant they were able to hold the scratch group off by nearly 50 seconds at the finish.

Juvenile, Jordan Skinner (Dinnington RC) was a clear winner ahead of James Thompson (Sheffrec CC) and Jamie Raven (Rutland CC).

Race 2 Torworth Series: 30-04-09

The second race of the Torworth series was once again held in bright weather which resulted in a fast race. The scratch group set faster lap times than the previous week which meant with 5 miles remaining the field had come together except for the longmarker group and at that point it looked odds on that they would also be easily swept up in the closing stages. However, the scratch group paid the price of a final lap over half a minute slower and that combined with a bit of extra effort enabled the longmarker group to stay away which on the lap times looked unlikely throughout.

Juvenile Tom Saville (Norton Wheelers) took first place ahead of Karen Last (Doncaster Wheelers) and Alex Deck (J E James RT).

Race 3 Torworth Series: 07-05-09

The third race of the Torworth series was held in bright but windy conditions which made it tough for all the riders with lap times slower than the first two races. The scratch group made steady progress throughout and were always on target to overhaul the rest of the field by the finish.

With a strong head wind down the finishing straight making it difficult for anyone to jump away, defending NMRRL Champion Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) proved to be the strongest in the bunch sprint winning by 2 lengths from Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) with first race winner, juvenile Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC) claiming a very creditable third place and in so doing also taking the lead in the Overall Series.

Race 5 Torworth Series: 21-05-09

After last week's washout the 5th race of the Torworth Series was held in the best weather so far which produced some fast racing from all the groups. The field came together with 2 miles remaining and Charles Tennick (Yorkshire Velo/UK Bathroom) timed his sprint to perfection to take his first victory of the series ahead of juvenile, Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC) with Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) in third place.

Race 6 Torworth Series: 28-05-09

Hot & calm conditions greeted the last race at Torworth which produced the fastest lap times of all the series so far. Most of the groups had stayed apart approaching the final lap and the field merged in the closing 2 miles to produce a tight, closely fought bunch sprint where Daniel Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) won narrowly from Graham Waller (Sheffrec CC) with Charles Tennick (Yorkshire Velo/UK Bathroom) in third place.

The League now moves onto the Harworth circuit with juvenile Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC) just holding onto his overall lead, although some riders still have a extra ride in hand due to the cancelled 4th race.

HARWORTH RESULTS

Race 7 Harworth Series: 04-06-09

In total contrast to the warm, clear weather for the final race at Torworth, the first race of the Harworth Series was held in cold, cloudy, windy conditions which made for a difficult race for everyone concerned. All the groups stayed apart beyond half distance and eventually came together in the closing 2 miles.

James Thompson (Sheffrec CC) was a clear winner of the bunch sprint with Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) in 2nd place and Josh Cole (Sports Cover/J E James) in 3rd. As a result, with previous leader Jordon Skinner having a night off, Lee Allen took over as the new Overall Leader of the League.

Race 8 Harworth Series: 11-06-09

Warmer conditions greeted the riders to the 2nd race of the Harworth conditions and as a result all the groups recorded faster lap times compared to the previous week. The scratch group were well on schedule to overhaul the rest of the field but two slower laps in the middle of the race put paid to any chance they had of contesting the finish.

The front two groups came together on the run into the finish where juvenile Daniel Dickinson (Dinnington RC) was a clear winner ahead of Ashley Proctor (Sheffrec CC) in second with Scott Haggart (Dinnington RC) just cm behind in third. Dinnington RC riders dominated the placings with seven riders placed in the first eight. The scratch group came in just 30 seconds behind the leading group.

Race 9 Harworth Series: 18-06-09

The third event of the Harworth Series was held in warm but windy conditions which once again made it difficult for all the riders. With just 6 miles remaining all the groups were still apart with the gap between front and back being just one minute. At that point it looked likely there would be a large bunch sprint but the group in front of the scratch group put in their fastest lap of the series so far to keep them at bay with the scratch group only connecting to the rear at the line.

Josh Cole (Sports Cover/J E James) was a clear winner ahead of juvenile Ashley Proctor (Sheffrec CC) with Dave Furniss (Doncaster Wheelers) in third. Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) remains the Overall Leader.

Race 9 Finish:

Race 10 Harworth Series: 25-06-09

The fourth race at Harworth had the best sunny, warm weather for years, a complete contrast to the seemingly ever present heavy rain there of previous years. Roadworks also enforced a move onto the smaller circuit which being a slightly easier circuit made for a faster race. This seemed to favour the longmarker group more than the other groups and after splitting in two at half distance they made full use of the handicap to stay clear to the finish.

Eamonn Cox (Sheffield Sports CC) won the sprint from Sam Kirby (Retford & District Wheelers) with Lady/Vet Alex Deck (J E James RT) in a creditable 3rd place. The scratch group rode inconsistently with alternating fast and slow laps to finish well adrift. Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) remains the Leader of the Overall Series.

Race 11 Harworth Series: 02-07-09

The weather for the fifth race at Harworth was even better than the previous week and the hottest evening seen there for years. The back wind up the finishing made for a fast race and the second group on the road were recording their fastest laps of the whole series so far. With 13 miles remaining the race had formed into two groups, however, the scratch group were caught out once again due the pace of the leading group.

At the finish, Ian Iveson (South Elmsall CC) was a clear winner ahead of Dominic Smith (Retford & District Wheelers) with Jamie Raven (Rutland CC) in third place. Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) remains the Overall Leader.

Race 11 Finish:

Race 12 Harworth Series: 09-07-09

A return to cool, blustery conditions at the final race of the Harworth Series made for a difficult race for all the riders. With 3 laps to go (12 miles remaining), the field had merged into just two groups with the scratch group closing on the leading group. Coming into the final lap, the whole field had come together and Daniel Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) attacked on the climb to open a small lead which he managed to hold onto over the closing 4 miles to finish 32 seconds ahead of the rest of the field where Tom Skubala (Planet X) won the sprint for 2nd ahead of Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC).

The League now moves onto the Stainton circuit for the final six races with the Overall Series wide open.

STAINTON RESULTS

Race 13 Stainton Series: 16-07-09

Wet and cold weather returned with a vengeance for the first event of the Stainton series, horrible conditions not seen since the cancellation of one of the Torworth races. However, this didn't deter the second group on the road from setting a rapid pace and the longmarker group were overhauled with over 10 miles still remaining with the scratch group never on course to catch up.

At the finish, Simon Jackson (Sheffrec CC) was a clear winner, several lengths ahead of Ian Iveson (South Elmsall CC) with Dave Marsh (Dinnington RC) in third.

Race 14 Stainton Series: 23-07-09

Earlier rain in the day relented which meant dry and sunny conditions for the second event at Stainton. This resulted in much faster lap times from most of the groups with the scratch group setting a far faster pace than the previous week. The whole of the field came together just into the final lap with 3 miles left and in the hotly contested sprint, Tom Skubala (Planet X) was a clear winner ahead of Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) with Daniel Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) in 3rd.

The second place finish enabled Lee Allen to regain the Overall Series lead, although juvenile, Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC) stayed in close contention with his 4th place.

Race 15 Stainton Series: 30-07-09

The third race of the Stainton series was held in sunny but blustery and cool conditions. This made for a difficult race for all the riders and with the scratch group less affected than the longmarker groups, the race came together with over 7 miles remaining. The super fast bunch sprint was easily won by Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) ahead of Daniel Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) in 2nd place, with junior Josh Cole (Sports Cover/J E James) in 3rd.

With 3 races remaining and most riders having 2 rides left, the Overall Series looks to be a battle between Lee Allen, Jordon Skinner (both Dinnington RC) and Lowthorpe with just 6 points separating the three riders, although other riders could still get into contention with good performances.

Race 16 Stainton Series: 06-08-09

Bright and calm conditions ensured a very fast race for the fourth event of the Stainton series. The scratch group recorded their fastest lap times of the whole series so far which meant that the whole of the field came together with 10 miles still remaining. The ensuing bunch sprint was easily won by James Thompson (Sheffrec CC) with Daniel Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) in 2nd with ex-NMRRL champion Steve Cocker (TLI) in 3rd place.

Several riders were involved in a crash coming into the final 100 yards but luckily nobody was seriously hurt although two riders Dominic Smith (Retford & District Wheelers) and Stuart Burrows (South Elmsall CC) were taken to hospital as a precaution but both were given the all-clear. The result means that Lowthorpe and Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC) are on equal points in the Overall Series with Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) just behind but with a race in hand.

Race 16 Finish:

Race 17 Stainton Series: 13-08-09

The penultimate race of the 2009 NMRRL was held in dry conditions and with the scratch group recording their slowest lap times of the series so far, the longmarker groups were always on course to stay away. However, just before the front two groups were about to merge with 10 miles remaining, a large tractor decided to block the road which slowed both groups to a standstill with riders having to pass in single file at walking pace. Whilst this had no effect on the gap back to the scratch group, it did split the front groups up with a smaller group emerging at the front to contest the finish where Ashley Proctor (Sheffrec CC) was a clear winner ahead of Pete Hennessey (Beighton Wheelers) with John Downing (Dinnington RC) in 3rd.

The result enabled Proctor to move into equal third postion in the Overall Standings alongside Lee Allen (Dinnington RC) just 3 points behind co-leaders Daniel Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) and Jordon Skinner (Dinnington RC).

Race 17 Slow Motion Finish:

Race 18 Stainton Series: 20-08-09

The last race of the 2009 NMRRL at Stainton was held in dry conditions which bode well for a hard fought race. With over half the distance completed and 3 laps (10 miles) remaining, the handicap looked to be working well as the groups were on course to come together but not for the first time this season, a couple of slower laps towards the end cost the scratch group any chance of contesting the finish. The longmarker groups therefore took full advantage and in the sprint finish Ian Iveson (South Elmsall CC) was a clear winner ahead of Ashley Proctor (Sheffrec CC) with John Downing (Dinnington RC) in 3rd place.

The scratch group trailed in a costly 36 seconds behind, they had started the race 3 mins 30 secs behind the Proctor group and after 4 laps the gap had been reduced to 1 min 20 secs with 3 laps still remaining. The points Ashley Proctor picked up for his 2nd place were enough for him to leapfrog into first place in the Overall Series and become only the second juvenile NMRRL champion.
