BARLOW SERIES RESULTS

RACE 7 - 04/06/2015

The first races of the new Barlow Series were contested by Groups B & C in dry, sunny conditions.

The Group B race had little in the way of meaningful breakaways, not for the lack of attempts, but no one was able to gain more than a handful of seconds. Nine times up the short climb
resulted in many riders getting dropped, so the finish was contested by much reduced bunch. Pete Crawforth (Veloviewer.com) won a closely fought sprint ahead of Luke Hind (Bolsover & District CC) with Alex Leyland (Out Of The Saddle CC) in 3rd. Crawforth & Leyland moved into joint 3rd place in the Overall Group B Standings, with the top places still held by Ben Turner (Bradford Olympic RC) & Dan Stephenson (Out Of The Saddle CC) who have now both moved up to Group A.

The fast pace in the opening laps of the Group C race reduced the field in half and as the race went on, the leading group gradually reduced further in numbers until there were just 12 riders left to contest the finish. Tom North (TLI) won the sprint narrowly ahead of Nick Boden & Graham Walton (both Common Lane Occasionals). The top places remained the same in the Group C Overall Standings with Allan Wailoo (La Squadra) & Marc Hughes (TLI) now having moved into Group B.

RACE 8 - 11/06/2015

The second races of the Barlow Series were contested by Groups A & C in dry, sunny but windy conditions.

In the Group C race, Nick Boden (Common Lane Occasionals) attacked on the first lap and opened up a narrow lead which he continued to hold for another lap and a half before being brought back by the bunch. After that there were little in the way of significant breakaways as the windy conditions made it into a race of attrition with riders continually getting dropped from the bunch. At the finish, Garry Hill (Dinnington RC) won a tight finish, less than half a wheel in front of Adam Lathbury (Rutland CC) with Boden taking 3rd place. The win enabled Hill to move into 2nd place in the Group C Overall Standings with Allan Wailoo (La Squadra) still leading but having moved into Group B.

The Group A was run off at a fast pace. Andy Nichols (Langsett Cycles RT) & James Hill (Bikeboxalan) briefly held a narrow lead at the end of the first lap, but the race was back together a lap later. The bunch then split in 2 with a group of 6 riders consisting of Nichols, Joe Elwood, Dan Lowthorpe (all Langsett Cycles RT), Dave Coulson (Envelopemaster), Robert Mitchell (Out Of The Saddle CC) & Callum Stewart (Sheffrec CC) forging clear with 6 laps to go. Two laps later, Elwood attacked, opening up a significant lead on his breakaway companions, with his team-mates leaving the chasing to Coulson, Mitchell & Stewart. Over the remaining laps, Elwood gradually increased his lead and took a well deserved win, 45 seconds ahead of Lowthorpe & Nichols who took 2nd & 3rd places to make it a Langsett Cycles 1-2-3. Stewart, Mitchell & Coulson took 4th, 5th & 6th places respectively and one should still give a mention to the group led in by Dan Stephenson (Out Of The Saddle CC) who never gave up chasing.

Nichols remains at the top of the Group A Overall Standings, but his lead has been cut to just 2 points by Elwood.

RACE 9 - 18/06/2015

The third races of the Barlow Series were contested by Groups A & B in dry, but very windy conditions which made the racing even more difficult.

The Group A race ended being very much a race of attrition with the small starting bunch gradually getting smaller as the race went on. At the finish, just 6 riders contested the sprint with Joe Elwood (Langsett Cycles RT) taking his second, successive win ahead of team-mate Andy Nichols with Ashley Brown (Polypipe RT) in 3rd. Elwood now takes over the lead in the Group A Overall Standings, just 1 point ahead of Nichols with Robert Mitchell (Out Of The Saddle CC) moving into 3rd place.

In the Group B race, juveniles Sam Walsham (Maxx Road Team) & Jack Ward (Sharrow CC) opened up an 18 second lead by the end of the 2nd of the 8 lap race. A lap later, Alex Leyland (Out Of The Saddle CC) closed to within a few seconds of the leading duo, but failed to get across to them and was back in the bunch at half distance with the gap opening up to over half a minute. The breakaway companions continued to work well together and it was clear that they weren't going to be caught. In the closing stages of the final lap, Ward attacked to take a fine solo win with Walsham coming in 15 seconds behind. Leyland was still strong enough to attack the bunch to take 3rd place but over a minute down on Ward, with Lee Farmer (Out Of Saddle CC) winning the bunch sprint for 4th place.

The top places in the Overall Group B Standings remained the same despite Ben Turner (Bradford Olympic RC) & Dan Stephenson (Out Of The Saddle CC) having moved up into Group A, with Leyland now moving into sole possession of 3rd place.

RACE 10 - 25/06/2015

The fourth round of the Barlow Series were contested by Groups B & C in dry, sunny conditions with little wind.

In the Group B race, last week's winner Jack Ward (Sharrow CC) attacked on the first lap, opening up an 8 second lead on the bunch, but a lap later the field was back altogether again. With 5 laps to go, Ward tried again, this time with fellow breakaway companion from last week, Sam Walsham (Maxx Road Team) and at half distance, it was now Ward with Steven Howe (Rutland CC) with the bunch chasing hard not too far behind. Then disaster struck for Ward, a broken front changer forcing him to pull out, leaving Howe alone in front. With 2 laps to go, it was the turn of Alex Leyland (Out Of The Saddle CC) to attack, but this proved to be short lived as the bunch quickly brought him back. At the bell, Richard Wilkinson (Rutland CC) held a few seconds advantage but, once again, the bunch quickly pulled him back.
At the finish, Peter Collins (Sharrow CC) was the clear winner of the bunch sprint with Luke Hind (Bolsover & District CC) in 2nd place and Walsham in 3rd.

The top places in the Overall Group B Standings remained the same despite Ben Turner (Bradford Olympic RC) & Dan Stephenson (Out Of The Saddle CC) having moved up into Group A, with Leyland still in 3rd place.

In the Group C race, Phil Lindley (Mansfield RC) held a 10 second lead over the duo of Nick Boden & Graham Walton (both Common Lane Occasionals) at the end of the first lap. A lap later it was the turn of Tom North (TLI) who held a narrow lead, but the field was soon back together again. At half distance, it was North again, this time with Luke Lunde-Pickover (TLI), with the duo holding a 10 second lead over the bunch. A lap later, the breakaways had increased their advantage to 12 seconds, but the bunch were determined not to let them go and the field was back altogether with 2 laps to go.
The race then stayed together over the closing laps and at the finish, Lunde-Pickover proved to be the strongest, taking the win a few lengths ahead of David Joyce (La Squadra) who was just a cm in front of Boden in 3rd.
Garry Hill (Dinnington RC) took 4th place which enabled him to take over the lead in the Overall Group C Standings, finally replacing Allan Wailoo (La Squadra) who had moved into Group B.

RACE 11 - 02/07/2015
The penultimate round of the Barlow Series was intended to be contested by Groups A & C. However, the warm, sunny conditions of the afternoon gave way to cool, wet and blustery conditions which resulted in a poor turnout, especially for the Group A race which was due to start just after 8pm.

The Group C race stayed together until half distance when a group of 4 riders consisting of Tom North (TLI), Bruno Schooling (Rutland CC), Sam Smith (Sheffield Sports CC) & Graham Walton (Common Lane Occasionals) opened up a 10 second advantage over the rest of the field. During the next lap, Richard Stevenson (Rutland CC) managed to bridge the gap on the climb to make it 5 at the front with 3 laps to go. Adam Lathbury (Rutland CC) & John Vardy (Maxx RT) then attacked what was left of the bunch and managed to make it across to the break so that 7 riders would contest the finish. Vardy proved to be the fastest to take the win a length ahead of Schooling in 2nd and Walton in 3rd.

The result didn't have any effect on the top places in the Group C Overall Standings with Garry Hill (Dinnington RC) still leading.

The nasty conditions prior to the Group A race resulted in only 8 riders turning up so a decision was unanimously accepted to cancel the race. A bonus 5 points were awarded to each of those who made the effort to turn up. Ironically, by the time the Group A race was due to start, the weather changed to pleasant, sunny conditions.

1. JOHN VARDY A MAXX RT 17.6 miles in 44 mins 03 secs

RACE 12 - 25/06/2015

The final round of the Barlow Series was contested by Groups A & B in warm, sunny conditions. Due to the low numbers signing on, Group A set off a minute and a half after Group B over an extended race distance of 14 laps of the 2.2 mile circuit.

For the opening few laps, Group A gradually reduced the deficit until catching Group B after 3 and a half laps. The field then split into 3 distinct groups with 8 laps to go. At half distance the leading group split again leaving 7 riders in front; Joe Elwood, Danny Lowthorpe, Andy Nichols (all Langsett Cycles RT), Alex Leyland, Robert Mitchell (both Out Of The Saddle CC), Callum Stewart (Sheffrec CC) & Jack Ward (Sharrow CC) with Rob Blackburn (TLI), Robert Fowler & Nathan Smith (both Rutland CC) dropping off the fast pace. A lap later, Leyland had been dropped from the breakaway, soon to be absorbed by the chasing trio. This is how it stayed until the finish where Elwood took the win ahead of Nichols with Mitchell & Lowthorpe in 3rd & 4th places respectively. Ward, in 5th place, was the only Group B rider able to stay with the leading group and Stewart came in 6th just a few seconds behind. Fowler won the sprint from the chasing group, to take 2nd place in the Group B's narrowly ahead of Blackburn.

At the end of the Barlow Series, the top 3 places in the Group A Overall Standings remained the same with Elwood, Nichols & Mitchell leading the way and Stewart moved into 4th place.

Ben Turner (Bradford Olympic RC) still leads the Overall Group B Standings ahead of Dan Stephenson (Out Of The Saddle CC) despite both of them moving into Group A. Leyland is now in 3rd, with Ward's two Group B wins at Barlow taking him into 4th place.
